The opening of “Aivazovsky and Marine Artists” exhibition

The official opening of “Aivazovsky and Marine Artists” exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the famous marine painterґs birth was held at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus on the 7th of July. The highlight of the exhibition was the biggest Aivazovskyґs canvas held in the collection of the museum. Many years the canvas was kept in store rooms, however, thanks to financial aid of ARARAT the canvas is now renovated and available to the public.

Vladimir Prokoptsov, the director of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, opened the event with an official speech telling how the event was brought to life and welcoming all the guests among who was Oleg Yesayan, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia to Belarus. The ambassador also delivered a speech in which he thanked the staff of the museum and expressed a hope for further strengthening of relations between Armenia and Belarus.

“Aivazovsky and Marine Artists” exhibition occupies 4 halls and welcomes the visitors with paintings of Alexey Bogolyubov, Valentin Serov, Nikolay Dubovskoy, Lev Lagorio, Gabriello Kassesi and, of course, dozens of paintings of the unsurpassed master of marine landscapes Hovhannes Aivazovsky, who is more famous as Ivan Aivazovsky. The exhibition consists of both his paintings and graphic art, including several ones from private collections.

The heart of the exhibition, however, became the huge 2X3 meters canvas called “The storm on the Sea of Azov in April, 1886”. For many years this painting was not available to the public, since the canvas needed to be renovated and the frame was in a poor condition as well. However, with the efforts of Belarusian specialists the canvas was restored and a new frame was bought in Italy. ARARAT financed this important step and now the famous painting can delight the public again.

The plot of the canvas “The storm on the Sea of Azov in April, 1886” is based on real events. In April of 1886, a storm happened on the sea of Azov, which caused the wreck of the ship «Hawk». The entire crew died, except for one sailor, who managed to survive by tying himself around the top of the mast.
